If you have been reading our blog for a while you might remember my posts on Cake International 2010 sharing some of the awesome competition cakes that were on display last year. Well, I was so inspired by the cakes that I decided I would give it a go and entered not one but two cakes – a wedding cake and a sculpted cake.
I debated, quite literally, for weeks about the design for the wedding cake entry. Should I go for something that I felt the judges would like or should I stay true to my own style? After endless sketches, much playing around with cake dummies and long conversations with numerous people I decided to go my own way. My final thoughts were ‘Blow it – I’m going to have fun being creative and if I get an award it’s a bonus!’
So here is the wedding cake I went for in the end – I call it Star Dancer. I think it reflects my love of bold colours and yearning to create something that’s a little out of the ordinary. It certainly stood out amongst all the white and ivory in the wedding cake category. I used some pretty ‘old school’ techniques in this cake such as pastillage for the moon and runouts for the dancer but the overall effect is far from old school!

And I got an award!!! A merit no less which I was thrilled to bits with. The little stars that the dancer is scattering are edible diamonds which glittered beautifully under the lights.
My other entry just had to be a carved cake as that is my favourite technique! Again it took me a while to decide on a design but I finally settled on a Chinese dragon in a stormy sky. I felt the carve was complicated enough to score points and it allowed me to use a number of techniques to achieve the different textures on the dragon’s body and mane. I have christened him Dave by the way, for no other reason than the fact that it’s not a very dragon-y name!

You could have knocked me down with a feather when I saw the Silver award I received for Dave :0 The judges had some great feedback too and I learned a lot from the competition – most importantly, if you do what you love it will shine through in your work and others will love it too
Next year I’m going for gold!!!
