West Country Wedding Venues #2 – River Cottage

I have been a very busy bees over the summer and autumn, buzzing all over Somerset, Dorset and Devon delivering delicious wedding cakes for our lovely customers. Some venues I just love to go back to time and again, not just because they are beautiful or have great amenities but because the teams at the venues stand out as professional and are warm and welcoming. So, if they are this nice to me as a supplier can you imagine how nice they are to their customers! I thought it would be a great idea to share with you some of my stand-out venues from this year in the hope that I can help you find that dream location for your special day.

In this second post on west country wedding venues I’m featuring a venue that I have visited and spent time at but not delivered to and one which might not have crossed your mind as a wedding venue at all. It’s the wonderfully rural River Cottage HQ.

If top quality food is a big priority for your wedding day then River Cottage has to be very high on your list of venue choices! I have been very lucky to spend a sociable evening at River Cottage which included grazing on a range of the tastiest canapes I’ve ever had, the unusual ingredients and imaginative flavour combinations had the guests practically mugging the staff as they emerged from the kitchen which their platters loaded! I would recommend booking your wedding here based on the quality of those little morsels alone but in truth there is so much more at the venue that delights. From the efficient, friendly and knowledgeable staff to the wonderfully cosy yurt with it’s log burner and the bright and spacious converted barn, the whole venue oozes rustic charm and gives you the feeling that you are being extremely well looked after.

River Cottage is a very informal and flexible venue which is ideally suited to relaxed weddings with a rustic or vintage twist. The in house wedding co-ordinator can ably advise on all aspects of your day and has overseen everything from a typical English country fete feel to a performance by Russian ballerinas! Many couples who choose River Cottage for their wedding live outside of the West Country so the venue have built up a good knowledge of reliable, local suppliers and can always point you in the right direction if you are in need of a local florist, cake maker or entertainer etc.

The one thing that the venue are not flexible on is the food – it’s local and seasonal or it’s not on the table at River Cottage, as you would expect from this iconic brand if you have watched any of their numerous television series. So if you are insisting on Strawberries in February then it may not be the venue for you! If you’re a foodie looking for a venue who’ll just let you do your thing however, then fill your boots

What Makes it Different: The food (oh my lord, the food!) and the tractor rides

Bunting Birthday Cake

One of our lovely regular customers requested a cake for a ladies get together where several of the ladies were celebrating birthdays. With lots of different people to please we went for a pretty, modern design which picks up on the huge trend for bunting we have seen everywhere recently.

We have been looking for an excuse to play with paste patterning, which is a technicque for creating patterned sheets of sugarpaste where the pattern goes all the way through the icing. This was the perfect technique for creating sugar bunting and we were really pleased with the results – as was the customer!

Buttercream Wedding Cake

Don’t worry if you are not a fan of fondant or royal icing, you can still have a traditional tiered wedding cake using a buttercream frosting. This buttercream wedding cake with hand made gingerbread bride and groom topper was made for a December wedding in a converted barn so the rustic finish to the frosting worked perfectly with the venue. A buttercream finish also has the advantage of letting the delicous aromoas of the cake through so your wedding cake not only looks great but smells fantastic too. Lucy opted for our much talked about carrot cake for the bottom tier, then a fragrant orange and chocolate cake in the middle with a traditional vanilla cake for the top tier.

If rustic is not your style we can make buttercream wedding cakes with a smooth finish for a more traditional look or pipe it on in ruffles and roses for a pretty, vintage feel. Dots and Roses Ivory Wedding Cake

Michelle and James needed a statuesque wedding cake to feed their 150 guests and still be able to keep the top tier but they also wanted to keep it elegant. We went for a very classic, pretty style featuring delicate swiss dots and full bloom ivory roses with a subtle pink blush. The double height tiers give a more slender sillouette than a six tier cake, maintaining the elegant look and the tumbling rose petals break up the straight lines of the tall tiers. The little hand modelled, ivory bicycle adds a subtle personal touch for the couple who are both keen mountain bikers and they get to keep it as a little memento of their dream wedding cake.

Purple Butterfly Wedding Cupcake Tower

Bountiful is the word that comes to mind when we look at these gorgeous photographs of Joanne and Jason’s wedding cupcake tower. One hundered cupcakes with a top tier is the perfect amount to fill our seven tier maypole stand, leaving a few cupcakes to spill over from the bottom tier, inviting your guests to dig in! Purple and ivory is a classic wedding colour palette that never seems to go out of style, along with butterlies and roses. We made the top tier ‘floating’ for this display to add to the light feeling given by the flight of sugar butterflies alighting on it. With four flavours of cupcake and a rich fruit top tier there were plenty of choices to keep everyone happy too. Here’s what the bride and groom had to say about thier lovley cake:

Shabby Chic Wedding Cupcake Tower

Simon and Emma had a relaxed vintage feel in mind for their wedding day in the beautiful setting of Hestercombe Gardens so wanted something vintagey but not too regimented for their cupcake tower. We achieved an informal, shabby chic look with a mixture of textures, shapes and colours using smooth fondant and fluffy buttercream with roses, blossoms and pearls in ivory, soft pink and fresh green. Simon was keen to have a bespoke bride and groom topper but Emma didn’t like the idea of them standing on top so we seated them in amongst the cupcakes for a more subtle look that tied in well with the style of the cake.

West Country Wedding Venues – Maunsel House

Maunsel House

I’m going to start with the wonderful Maunsel House, a fantastic Somerset wedding venue which is situated in the tiny village of North Newton, Somerset which is both wonderfully rural and conveniently located within a few miles of the M5. Our first delivery here was early in the season and the house and gardens looked glorious in the April sunshine.

On this occassion the wedding cake was a good sized wedding cupcake tower, all with cupcake wrappers so we were there some time setting up. This kind of set up can give us an insight into the running of a venue that brides and grooms don’t often get to see on their walk-rounds and we can say that Maunsel House runs like a very well oiled machine! Because of the very warm weather we set up as late as possible and arrived as the guests were assembling ready to walk to the cute little church within the estate grounds. As soon as the guests had departed, shortly followed by the bride and her father, the staff leapt into action readying everything for after the ceremony. The staff were all efficient, friendly and welcoming and I was particularly impressed with the in-house wedding co-ordinator. More often than not when suppliers arrive at a venue they are left to their own devices with little or no input from the venue but at Maunsel House the co-ordinator is very much on top of everything and was there with last minute instructions from the bride, checking I had everything I needed and generally ensuring everything was perfect for her customers. Very impressive!

Although Maunsel House is most definately an english country house it has a very warm, intimate feel to it which can be lacking in some older properties. They offer exclusive use for weddings which adds to the feeling of intimacy and relaxation. Despite this feeling of cosyness they can accomodate large wedding parties and have facilities on the estate for both church and civil ceremonies giving you the ultimate convenience and flexibility. I am told by my couples that the catering is also of excellent quality, sadly I haven’t tried it for myself yet! I can’t wait to go back for our next delivery in January, I’m hoping to see the house and gardens with a light covering of snow

Art Deco Black & Gold Wedding Cake

Black and gold is a stunning colour combination, bold yet sophisticated and reminiscent of the Art Deco colour palette. We think it works really well as a wedding cake and the addition of edible diamond ‘stars’ lifts the design and gives it a little extra sparkle. The Art Deco theme is also reflected in the romantic dancing figure. All of the decorations on this cake are entirely edible – isn’t it amazing what you can do with sugar We call this our Star Dancer wedding cake and were very proud to be awarded a merit award for it at Cake International 2011 - the biggest cake design show in Europe!
