We were incredibly excited back in August to reach the Finals of the National Cupcake Championships 2011 with our Cherry Coke Float cupcake. We fought off stiff competition from some of the best cupcakers in the country to reach the prestigeous finals held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. We were very proud, not to mention star-struck, to have our cakes judged by the likes of Miss Cakehead, Eric Lanlard and Peggy Porschen to name just a few.
Here is one of our 12 identical cupcakes that made it through a very cramped and hot tube journey into the heart of London during the rush hour – not a journey we’d like to repeat in a hurry! The recipe was especially created for the competition and consists of a dark, sticky cola flavoured cake filled with home made cherry compote and topped with vanilla ‘ice cream’, a fresh cherry and cherry coke flavoured bubble sugar. Although we didn’t win on the day we were chuffed to be there and very proud of our little cakes!
The National Cupcake Championships form part of the build up to National Cupcake Week which runs from the 12th to the 18th fo September this year. This annual event is now in it’s third year and was established by the industry publication British Baker to help promote fresh baked cupcakes and all those that bake them. - Strawberry Daiqari – moise vanilla sponge studded with fresh rum-soacked strawberries and topped with strawberry buttercream and a slice of strawberry
- Screaming Orgasm – moist coffee sponge topped with a Bailey’s cream liquer buttercream and a Baileys chocolate truffle
